My Bookshelf 2

This month, I began showcasing my bookshelf for three months at the Sukiama Kamakura, a book cafe located in Yuigahama, Kamakura. This cafe operates with a theme of upcycling.

I would like to introduce one of the books on this shelf.

It is "However" by Hirokazu Kore-eda, which compiles his first television documentary. Now a renowned film director, this work reflects his beginnings.

Toyotoku Yamauchi, raised by a single mother, wrote poetry and novels and could not become a novelist despite being classmates with Kenzaburo Oe at Tokyo University.

Starting his career as a welfare bureaucrat, he possessed a delicate and kind heart, devoting himself to social welfare issues like disability and welfare assistance, and was beloved by those involved. He valued words more than appearances. His sincerity became his downfall in the face of power relations and politics. Lacking the bureaucratic trait of making decisive cuts according to budget limits led to tragedy.
